We are delighted that this stunning W114 280 CE Coupé has found its way into our showroom for sale. These, first-generation, Paul Bracq-designed, pillarless coupés exhibit a certain purity of line and, with their lowered roofline, lowered seating and fully wind-down windows, were real head-turners in period and, despite being 50 years old, have the same effect today.
Dating from 1972, this lovely example has been enjoyed by three previous keepers and is finished in the rare colour of Byzantine Gold Metallic (422), with matching hub-caps. Refreshed a few years ago, this distinctive hue was only available for three years (‘72-’75) and was seldom seen on the CE. The interior wears its original ‘Bamboo’ MB-Tex, with no splits or tears visible, and matching carpets. The odometer currently indicates 66,501 miles and the dashboard and all controls function correctly.
The under-pinnings have been inspected and benefit from recent new rear springs and brake calipers to the rear. There are no signs of welding and the underside has the very honest look and feel of original factory finishes, very rare on a 114 CE of this age. On road test, the 2.8-litre, twin-cam, M110 six-cylinder started on the button and settled into a nice idle with the temperature remaining at the correct level. The gearbox was equally well behaved with smooth changes and no undue noises.
The car is accompanied by its M-B brown folder with manuals, spare keys, service records and a number of older invoices for service and maintenance.
If you are in the market for a handsome 70s coupé, then this low-mileage, 2.8-litre example in a rare colour and wonderful condition may well be the answer. The 280CE is the perfect classic ‘daily driver’, reliable enough to be used in modern traffic but stylish enough for weekend fun.
Call me for details and to arrange to come down and have a really good look at this elegant Mercedes coupé.
