The Mercedes Benz SLC, built for a decade until October 1981, was the car the classic market overlooked until it was almost too late. Whilst the R107 SL Roadster, on which the SLC was based, has been collectable ever since its production ceased, and hence survives in substantial numbers, the C107-coded coupé became forgotten and unloved once the striking 126-Series coupé arrived to replace it. Values stayed low, but things are now changing as it has become apparent just how scarce these big pillarless coupés have become, collectors are having second thoughts and prices are rising.
Here at Classic Benz, I am pleased to be able to offer this 1979, 4520cc V8-powered, 450 SLC for sale as a ‘project’. Fitted from new with a sunroof, air-conditioning and four electric windows, it was enjoyed as intended for some years before being committed to long-term storage. At some point, it was treated to a classic 1980s Lorinser ‘Aero-kit’ which included the front air-dam, side-skirts and rear valance in addition to wider BBS sports alloys and a wood-rim steering wheel.
The car has currently covered around 139,000 miles and presents quite well. The paintwork remains in decent condition, and the underbody has been inspected and appears to have only ever had minor welding to the front chassis rails. The bulkhead lid has been removed and inspected, pleasingly showing only minor surface rust and, importantly, clear drain holes.
The engine has not been started this year so its condition has not been assessed but its owner has confirmed that it was running when he last put the car away. The brakes, however, are binding and will require freeing-off before being towed away.
This is a great opportunity to take on a 450 SLC, undoubtedly an appreciating classic. It would be straightforward to return the car to standard or recommission it with the dramatic, eighties Lorinser-look (now back in vogue - I’m told). Call me for details and some idea of what it might cost to return this handsome C107 to top form.
