Description

The 420SL was introduced in 1986 for the last three years of R107 production. It replaced the 380SL and was offered alongside the 5.0-litre V8 and six-cylinder 300SL. Although tens of thousands of 300 and 500SLs were built, 420SL production numbered just 2,148 making it the most exclusive of all the R107 SL models.

Here at Classic Benz, Bruce Greetham is pleased to offer this beautifully presented 1987 420SL for sale. It’s finished in Nautic Blue over Cream leather, a classic combination and one of the most popular selections from the R107’s large colour palette.

The coachwork is in very nice condition with just a few very small blemishes under close inspection. It has obviously been used and enjoyed which is what they are for and we always encourage SL owners to jump in their cars, get out there and live a life.

The interior benefits from the rear seat option and presents equally well with the cream leather in great condition and totally commensurate with the indicated mileage of 72,000. The carpets are fresh, front and back, and appear to have benefited from the long-term use of over-mats.

The boot compartment has no rust in the wheel-well section and looks factory correct. The spare wheel still wears its mounting peg and foam support, the jack and tool kit are all present and correct, and the spare wheel cover mounting bolts still retain their gold finish, indicating a well stored car and no wet carpets.

The soft top has been replaced at some point and looks fresh with nice clear plastic windows. It fits the bodywork well and operates with no difficulty showing that it has been regularly used. The matching hardtop has lived a life mainly on the stand under a cover but, when fitted, all is correct with no damage and the paint condition is spot on.

The history file records seven previous owners and has been backed up by pretty much all of them with details of work carried out. The service book is full with a mixture of supplying dealer and specialist stamps, 23 in total. There are records/invoices for many new parts over the years including engine mountings, subframe bushes, fluids, filters and brake pads. The bulkhead has been inspected by myself to confirm originality and totally clear drain holes. No welding required here on this one. All tyres are dated 2024 and matching all-round.

The current owner has owned it since 2012 and kept it in a controlled temperature garage alongside other classics. We understand that during his ownership, it’s always started on the key and never let him down.

It’s accompanied by the aforementioned history file (worth taking some time to read through), the book wallet, manuals, both roof handles, and a full dealer pack all present and looking fresh. If you are in the market for a well-sorted R107 420SL, we invite and encourage your inspection of this lovely Nautic Blue example. Give me a call and make an appointment. You won’t be disappointed.
