1989 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL (R107) Auto

On sale here at Bruce Greetham Classic Benz is a fine example of a very late-production model R107 500 SL from March 1989. It’s beautifully finished in Diamond Blue Metallic over a glorious Cream Leather interior with a contrasting Dark Blue Mohair Soft Top, a classically stylish colour combination. The soft top still displays the Mercedes three-pointed star logos to each plastic window, one of a number of features that show the car’s high level of originality.  It’s covered just 66,000 miles (over 36-years) which is a great ‘drivers mileage’ in the sense that you can use the car whenever you want unlike those very low mileage cars whose value is affected every time you add another 1,000 miles. You only need to show the key to the super-smooth 237bhp, 5-litre M117 V8 and it bursts into life ready for any occasion and that lovely V8 ‘burble’ brings a grin, roof up or down.

History

This R107 500 SL started its journey in Reading in March 1989 so was obviously from the last months of production. It was initially serviced by the main Mercedes-Benz Dealer at Green Oaks, displaying stamps from 1989, serviced every 6 months and showing mileages to 2009, then on to Slough Mercedes until 2011, and thereafter specialist's stamps through to the current day. It appears its five former keepers have been particularly fastidious when it came to servicing and maintenance and, happily, that attention to detail has been carried over to the car’s documentation.  Every single MOT certificate is stacked in the file from 1992 to the current day, alongside invoices, receipts, handbooks, dealer leaflets and both sets of spare keys. You can't get much better than that.

Condition Report

When considering purchasing an R107 SL, the single most important area is the bulkhead. This weak area is a deal breaker on many cars and something you need 100% reassurance about, not always easy to get. I have personally inspected this car and am confident that the bulkhead shows no evidence of corrosion and the drain holes are water free. It’s also comforting to see from the car’s history file that in May 2024 at 65,000 miles, the current owner invested over £8,000 on improvements including a complete rear bumper assembly, steering box adjustment, replaced all five tyres with Michelin Energy, and a full major service covering fluids and spark plugs.
