HISTORY
This R129 SL500 started its life in Japan, having been imported into the UK in the last 10 years. The service history shows all the work recently undertaken, including newly-fitted distributor caps and rotor arms – which is a useful preventative maintenance task with this model.
The wiring loom is in perfect order and shows no signs of wires cracking or breaking.
The car’s blue/black paintwork is virtually unmarked, with no rust to the wings. The hard top is in perfect condition and sits correctly on its mounts. The electric soft top raises and lowers with a flick of the red button; there are no rips or tears to the fabric. The plastic windows in the hood have been replaced at some point.
In the interior, the front seats have been re-trimmed and still show their newness, with dull matte and crease-free bolsters. The wood facia is in remarkable condition for a 30-year-old R129.
WHY BUY?
The beautifully balanced quad-cam, 32-valve, M119 engine is a pleasure to drive in. Matched with the 4-speed automatic box, the R129 SL500 shows its characterful low-down grunt.
In my opinion, matched with this engine, the early “orange indicator” cars show the purity of the R129 model.
A “triple-black” SL always attracts the collector.
If you are looking for a rust-free under-bodied R129 from this period, with a lovely driving mileage, then this has to be a contender for the purist or as the Sunday-driver’s fun car.
