Description

HISTORY.

Sharing the same basic (R107) platform architecture as its convertible sibling, the Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC Fixed-Head Coupé (C107) was introduced in 1972. A full four-seater, the model's 14-inch stretched wheel base was disguised by various ingenious styling cues such as the louvred sail panels that adorned its rear three-quarter windows. Equipped with all round coil-sprung independent suspension, power steering and four-wheel disc brakes, it proved a comfortable and refined grand tourer. An elegant and timeless design, the 450 SLC looks as good today as it did when first introduced, which in no small measure explains its enduring popularity with collectors.

Here at Bruce Greetham Classic Benz, we have a beautiful example of these rare cars for sale. C107s in this super condition are very hard to find and I am lucky enough to be part of assisting the owner in finding it a new home.

Dating from the model’s penultimate year, the car was originally owned by junior members of the Kuwaiti Royal Family who were based in Belgrave Place in London and only used it occasionally covering a low mileage. It appears, however, to have been regularly serviced with stamps in the factory service book from Rivervale Mercedes, Green Oaks of Reading, Steve Redfearn Motors until 2018 and finally a visit to Weybridge-based, SSMotors. The current owner purchased it from the family and, even though it was in decent overall condition, he is rather fastidious and commissioned a marque specialist to take it to the next level with an investment of over £35,000. Nothing was missed, skimped or corners cut bringing the car up to meet his own expectations.  TheHistory File contains detailed invoices for all this work alongside the original service book and manuals in the dealer book pack.

SPECIFICATION.

The car is beautifully presented in Astral Silver and is unmarked apart from a couple of tiny blemishes which are hardly noticeable to the untrained eye. The paintwork is even with a high-gloss finish and no difference in shades which is sometimes evident on silver cars in certain lighting conditions. All five wheels were fully refurbished in the correct shade of silver and shod with very expensive Michelin XWX tyres, so no expense spared. The interior is dressed in Black Velour cloth, an expensive option at the time and, when combined with the gleaming Burr Walnut veneers, the cabin is altogether rather stylish particularly when all the windows are down.  The rear seat features a fifth seat-belt for occasional use and air-conditioning is fitted.

In common with its drop-top sibling, the 450 SLC is powered by the 4520cc M117 V8 offering 222bhp through the three-speed automatic gearbox and capable of taking this sleek, four-seat coupé all the way up to 135mph. These engines are well-known for being virtually bomb-proof when fitted to high-mileage S-Class saloons, so at 36,000miles, it’s just waking up. The SLC’s tool kit, jack and triangle have all been refurbished and sit in their designated compartments.

WHY BUY.?

If you are in the market for a sleek 70s/80s pillar-less, four-seat Coupé with a mighty V8 upfront and a super low mileage, you may not need to look any further. This Classic Mercedes looks and drives like it should with everything operating as it should. Come along for a closer look and you will see what I mean. Test drives and viewings are by appointment only.
